Small library markings to spine and front endpaper. Frontispiece plan of Liverpool damaged and repaired with sellotape. Another plan, of Royalist Fortifications, torn in two but complete. A little rubbing / bumping to corners, but a very nice copy indeed, sound and tight. Hardback. Full leather nicely repaired. Gilt decoration front & back, raised gilt bands & titles to spine, all edges gilt. Ex library, but library markings minimal. Very good, attractive. xvi + 844 + 13pp. Order No. NSBK-A6861

Stratton, Helen.
Walberswick Marshes:
(Date unknown).
An original delicate watercolour painting on card (unframed) believed to be by the artist Helen Stratton (24.5 cm x 27.5cm or 9.5 inches x 10.5 inches). Stratton is a highly-regarded illustrator of children's fairy tales. Signed with initials in bottom right-hand corner (active 1891-1925). Framer's plate (which is separate, but which has presumably been on the back of the picture when framed) gives provenance - Walberswick Marshes - Helen Stratton - and her London address: 113 Abingdon Road, Kensington. The picture, in greens and blues, is of a bridge over marshland. Walberswick in Suffolk was a haven for artists in the 1890s and 1900s and is associated with Philip Wilson Steer and his circle of English Impressionists. The card has suffered a little acidification from the original backing boards. Corners worn, one slightly split, some browning to edges, and light brown staining to top left edge, about 1.5cm wide. Although there is some tear damage to the right-hand side of the front cover, the book has been nicely repaired. There's a new spine, the covers have been neatly rebacked and there are new endpapers. The only other faults are a small tear (2cm) to right-edge of title page and some Roman numerals in ink are written at the base of the front cover. Otherwise, this is a good+, tight copy. Paperback.
