Pack of 10 greetings cards (all featuring the same design). Card measurements are 6 inches high by 4 inches wide and each card is complete with cellophane wrapper and envelope. Blank interiors for your own message or for any occasion. The image, printed in vibrant colours, is taken from suffragette poster, originally produced by The National Women's Social and Political Union. It shows a prison cell in which a woman is being forcibly held down in a chair by a man and a woman, whilst another man pours liquid down a tube into the woman's nose. Written on the prison wall are the words votes for women. Please note that the sample electronic image, unlike the cards themselves, is watermarked and reduced in quality, to prevent image theft. The Portcullis: The WSPU Holloway Badge / Brooch
(Modern Replica, 2018).
The original Holloway brooch, of which this is a faithful replica, was designed by Sylvia Panhurst and presented from 1909 onwards to suffragettes who had undergone imprisonment. The portcullis and chains are in a non-precious antique-chrome plate, and the arrow on top, which is the convict symbol, is purple, white and green enamel (the colours of the WSPU). Dimensions: 2cm X 2.5cm. With a secure butterfly clasp to the rear. Presented with a free purple velvet gift-pouch in an attractive gift-bag, which is clear at the front and shiny silver at the rear. An original photographic postcard for collectors of original suffragette / Votes for Women memorabilia. On March 3, 1913, the National American Woman Suffrage Association - NAWSA - organised a woman suffrage parade and demonstration in Washington DC. (Pennsylvania Avenue). It was timed to coordinate with Woodrow Wilson's presidential inauguration, the following day. The marchers were jeered and attacked, and had to fight their way through the mob, and the resulting publicity focused the country's attention on the issue of Woman Suffrage. This is an original, contemporary postcard, issued at the time, and shows suffragette women in costume. Liberty and her Attendants. Suffragettes' Tableau in Front of Treasury Bloc. Photo by Harris-Ewing. On the back of the card, there's a handwritten contemporary message in ink: "This photo was taken on the Treasury Steps. It was quite cold that day and blowing hard. They did not have much clothes on". The card has not been posted and there is no stamp or postmark. Postcard. Rear is a little browned, slightly soiled and darkened, naturally with age, minor wear to corners and edges.Otherwise overall good condition. pp. Order No. NSBK-C15905
