Symes, R. A.
Tracing Your Ancestors Through Letters and Personal Writings: a Guide for Family Historians
(Pen and Sword, 2016).
Could your ancestors write their own names or did they mark official documents with a cross? Why did great-grandfather write so cryptically on a postcard home during the First World War? Why did great-grandmother copy all the letters she wrote into letter-books? How unusual was it that great-uncle sat down and wrote a poem, or a memoir? Researching Family History Through Ancestors' Personal Writings looks at the kinds of (mainly unpublished) writing that could turn up amongst family papers from the Victorian period onwards - a time during which writing became crucial for holding families together and managing their collective affairs. With industrialisation, improved education, and far more geographical mobility, British people of all classes were writing for new purposes, with new implements, in new styles, using new modes of expression and new methods of communication (e.g. telegrams and postcards). Our ancestors had an itch for scribbling from the most basic marks (initials, signatures and graffiti on objects as varied as trees, rafters and window ledges), through more emotionally-charged kinds of writing such as letters and diaries, to more creative works such as poetry and even fiction. This book shows family historians how to get the most out of documents written by their ancestors and, therefore, how better to understand the people behind the words. Paperback. Black, Clementina.
A New Way of Housekeeping:
(W. Collins, 1st edition, 1918).
Rare first edition copy of this ground-breaking work. For the collector. Women employed in housekeeping; changes in domestic standards; why not be servantless?; the distaste for domestic service; labour-making houses; domestic federations; reconstructed domestic service; the motor as emancipator; waste of labour; women who do domestic work without aptitude or satisfaction; service of women needed by the country. Clementina Black urges a reorganisation of household duties, in order to free women from domestic drudgery. In her utopian vision of 'co-operative housekeeping', women would be released from the wasted effort of housework and made available for the labour market, which was now so very depleted of men after the Great War. She criticises the 'stupidity' of 'labour-making houses', and questions the continuing validity of the employment of domestic servants in the modern age. Her solution is to propose the formation of 'domestic federations'. These would represent committees of householders who would collectively manage their domestic arrangements in a centre 'fitted up with store places, kitchens, dining-rooms, offices, and lodgings for a nucleus of resident servants'. Hardback. Original cloth covered in small dark and white blotches, corners worn and spine split, text firm. A good working copy only. 132pp. Order No. NSBK-C4960
