Reproduction Suffragette Medal Hunger Strike Suffragettes:

Beautiful suffragette replica medal, a faithful reproduction of the original Hunger Strike one awarded to suffragettes who had gone on hunger strike (and often been force-fed) in prison. With the appearance of a military-style campaign medal, hunger strike medals were presented to suffragettes by the leadership of the Women's Social and Political Union (WSPU), and honoured those who had gone on hunger strike to to protest against not being recognised as political prisoners. The obverse of the medal is inscribed with the words 'HUNGER STRIKE', whilst the back is blank (where the recipient's name would have been engraved). Materials: Grosgrain ribbon in the famous suffragette colours of purple, white and green (vertical strips). Nickel with an antique-effect silver finish for an authentic "aged-look". A safe, secure pin-clasp at the rear. Presented with a free purple velvet gift-pouch which is in turn displayed within an attractive zip-lock gift-bag, clear at the front and shiny silver at the rear. Printed with archival inks on premium paper (300 GSM, Silk Art, photographic print). (Portrayer Publishers, 2020). Beautiful suffragette-themed, jewelled Jabot pin brooch, the perfect gift. Modern reproduction, brand new and art-deco in style. Main gem: imitation sapphire. Secondary gems: imitation diamonds. Dimensions: 57mm long and 12mm in breadth at widest point (where main jewel is). With safety pin and chain, and the famous suffragette slogan "Deeds Not Words" engraved on the rear of the main shaft. (These words are the wearer's secret commitment to the "Votes for Women" cause!) Jabot pins were first used to adorn, or fasten, a dangling ruffle known as a jabot worn by men (on shirts) and women (on dresses) during the 1600s. They became important as an article of jewellery from the Edwardian period onwards - the heyday of the British suffragette movement - and flourished through into the 1930s as a special piece of Art Deco decoration. Suffragettes' Parade. March 3rd 1913. Washington DC: Liberty and her Attendants. Suffragettes' Tableau in Front of Treasury Bloc
(I. & M. Ottenheimer, Baltimore, MD., 1913). An original photographic postcard for collectors of original suffragette / Votes for Women memorabilia. On March 3, 1913, the National American Woman Suffrage Association - NAWSA - organised a woman suffrage parade and demonstration in Washington DC. (Pennsylvania Avenue). It was timed to coordinate with Woodrow Wilson's presidential inauguration, the following day. The marchers were jeered and attacked, and had to fight their way through the mob, and the resulting publicity focused the country's attention on the issue of Woman Suffrage. This is an original, contemporary postcard, issued at the time, and shows suffragette women in costume. Liberty and her Attendants. Suffragettes' Tableau in Front of Treasury Bloc. Photo by Harris-Ewing. On the back of the card, there's a handwritten contemporary message in ink: "This photo was taken on the Treasury Steps. It was quite cold that day and blowing hard. They did not have much clothes on". The card has not been posted and there is no stamp or postmark. Postcard. Rear is a little browned, slightly soiled and darkened, naturally with age, minor wear to corners and edges.Otherwise overall good condition. pp. Order No. NSBK-C15905
