High-quality, attractive, reproduction suffragette badge / brooch. Votes for Women WSPU Suffragette Streamer. (Manufactured by Portrayer). Attractive, circular plated gold-coloured metal reproduction brooch / badge with firm safety-pin fitment at the rear for affixing to clothes. The original badge, on which this is faithfully based, was designed by Sylvia Pankhurst for the suffragette campaign in 1909 / 1910. It incorporates the purple, white and green colour-scheme of the Women's Social and Political Union, and depicts a woman stepping through an iron gate and heavy chains, carrying a 'Votes for Women' streamer. 25mm in diameter. Presented in an attractive zip-gift-bag which is clear at the front and shiny silver at the rear. Brand new, in fine condition. pp. Order No. NSBK-C15671

A modern reproduction of this suffragette poster, originally published by the Brighton and Hove Women's Francise Society, 191x (exact date uncertain). Printed with archival inks on premium paper (300 GSM, Silk Art, photographic print). Poster (in varying shades of brown and black) shows a woman holding a banner ("Justice Demands the Vote"), next to a shrouded woman holding the scales of justice. They're held back by a rope tied to two posts. Below the steps, a shrouded mother cuddles her baby and another woman in period fashion looks on. An original photographic postcard for collectors of original suffragette / Votes for Women memorabilia. On March 3, 1913, the National American Woman Suffrage Association - NAWSA - organised a woman suffrage parade and demonstration in Washington DC. (Pennsylvania Avenue). It was timed to coordinate with Woodrow Wilson's presidential inauguration, the following day. The marchers were jeered and attacked, and had to fight their way through the mob, and the resulting publicity focused the country's attention on the issue of Woman Suffrage. This is an original, contemporary postcard, issued at the time, and shows suffragette women in costume. Liberty and her Attendants. Suffragettes' Tableau in Front of Treasury Bloc. Photo by Harris-Ewing. On the back of the card, there's a handwritten contemporary message in ink: "This photo was taken on the Treasury Steps. It was quite cold that day and blowing hard. They did not have much clothes on". The card has not been posted and there is no stamp or postmark. Postcard. Rear is a little browned, slightly soiled and darkened, naturally with age, minor wear to corners and edges.Otherwise overall good condition. pp. Order No. NSBK-C15905

This first book-length biography of the militant suffragette Mary Raleigh Richardson reveals for the first time her true identity, ancestry, childhood and education, as well as her surprising - and exciting - international travels before she became embroiled in the suffrage struggle. During her time as a militant Mary was arrested nine times. Prepared to die for the cause, she adopted the hunger strike each time she was imprisoned, and was forcibly fed countless times. Her hunger strike medal boasted more bars than that of any other suffragette - something of which she remained proud for the rest of her life. Her most infamous deed was to use a cheap meat cleaver to inflict several gashes into Velasquez's Rokeby Venus, a world-famous and priceless painting. In a lesser-known and yet equally sensational attack she burned down a historic mansion near Hampton Court. During the war she continued to work for the vote, allying herself with both Sylvia Pankhurst's ELFS and the United Suffragists. Having joined the Labour Party she twice stood for Parliament, and in 1933 was briefly a member of Mosley's British Union of Fascists. Finding it did not align with her values she returned to socialism for the rest of her life. In retirement she penned Laugh a Defiance, a memoir of her suffrage days.
