Matson, Mike.
The Blue Coat Inheritance: Transition from Charity School to Grammar School at Stockton on Tees, 1721 - 1973. Vol One - The Eighteenth Century Blue Coat School.
(M. C. Matson, 2012).
Vol One - The Eighteenth Century Blue Coat School. This is the first volume of a proposed trilogy providing an in-depth history of the schools which originated as the Blue Coat Charity School in Stockton on Tees, County Durham, UK. The volume concerns itself with the first century of the school's existence (1721-1821) and explores its origins not only from local primary sources, but also within the contemporary social, economic and political contexts at national, county and town levels. The issues of Poverty, Education and Philanthropy in the 18th century are explored in some depth. This novel approach provides a much deeper understanding of how and why the school was founded than would otherwise have been the case in a narrow, exclusively school-focused account. 254pp inc. Illustrations, Appendices, Index and Bibliography. It is anticipated that Volume 2 (1822-1900) will be published in 2016. Paperback. Fine. ix + 240pp. Order No. NSBK-A15426
